The new FIAS Senior Fellow Laureatus title was installed by FIAS and STIFTUNG GIERSCH to honor scientist for their groundbreaking research in a FIAS related field of science.
The first recipient of a FIAS Senior Fellow Laureatus is Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Gerard ‘t Hooft.
His work concentrates on gauge theory, black holes, quantum gravity and fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics. His contributions to physics include a proof that gauge theories are re-normalizable, dimensional regularization, and the holographic principle.
He shared the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physics with his thesis advisor Martinus J. G. Veltman “for elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak interactions”.
Beside his outstanding work, FIAS and STIFTUNG GIERSCH were impressed by Prof. 't Hooft's great involvement at last years Karl Schwarzschild Meeting at FIAS, where he spend a whole week mostly educating students and young scientists and having inspiring discussions with them.
