H-QM Power Week 3 - November 2011

Data Analysis: QCD and Energy Loss

Date

November 9-13, 2011

Topics

In this week, we will provide a hands-on introduction to factorised perturbative QCD calculations of high-pt hadron production and parton energy loss calculations. We will provide an overview of the basic theoretical ideas, combined with working session where the participants can familiarise themselves with various numerical software tools. These include

  • Introduction to Monte Carlo techniques
  • Parton Density Function libraries (with DGLAP evolution)
  • Fragmentation function parametrisations (KKP, AKK)
  • Optical Glauber model geometry (path length, asymmetry etc)
  • Quenching weights for energy loss
If time allows, the differences between the currently available energy loss formalisms (GLV, ASW, AMY and HT) will also be discussed in some detail. The programme is intended for PhD students and young postdocs who have an active interest in this area and want to acquire hands-on experience and insight in the basic phenomenology of high-pt hadron production and parton energy loss. For a productive participation to the week, you need to have a reasonable level of programming experience (preferably using ROOT/C++). At the end of the week, you will have assembled a toolkit that allows to calculate nuclear modification factors (R_AA) and di-hadron suppression (I_AA) for heavy ion collisions using the baseline QCD formalism (leading order pQCD and quenching weights).

Practical Information

Begin/End

The power week starts with an introduction session on Wednesday evening and will close on Sunday around noon.

Late arrivals

If you will arrive late please contact the coordinator in advance.

Venue

The power week will be held at Hotel Mercure, 59 Route de Vers le Nant, Chamonix, France
Directions can be found here >.

Travel

Free, organized travel will be provided from Geneva to Chamonix. Details will be announced. Travel from other places to Chamonix/Geneva has to be organized and sponsored individually. For H-QM or HGS-HIRe participants arriving from Frankfurt special arrangements will be made.

Accomodation

Accomodation is in double rooms.

Registration Fee

For non HGS-HIRe or H-QM participants the registration fee for the power week is 100 Euros.

Food

Special food requirements (vegetarian, other) will be arranged on the first evening.
Full board is included in the lecture week.

What to bring

You need to bring a laptop!!

Further information on software you need is collected on this page . We will use mainly ROOT and some extra packages as listed there. We may still update the page as we work out the exercises, but the main packages are already listed.

You will need a C/C++ compiler and a fortran compiler to make everything work (e.g. gcc and gfortran). It would be good if you try to set up the software before the actual week, so that we don't have to spend too much time on technical issues during the week. If you run into a problem with the software, let us know.

Internet

Internet is available.

Expenses

For HGS-HIRe or H-QM participants all basic expenses are covered by the H-QM Research School. For all others the registration fee is 100 Euros. You only have to pay for local expenses (drinks,etc.). All meals are included.

Insurance

Though this trip will not generate any costs for your supervisor or group please do not forget to file a trip request so you are covered by insurance during the lecture week.
