From fundamentals of MBN Science towards applications
MBN systems have numerous applications in modern technology and medicine. Some of these technologies are emerging nowadays. The development of newly emerging technologies is often based on the fundamental research in corresponding fields. The MBN Science group at FIAS conducts such investigations focusing on the two particular research areas:
- Development of novel light sources. The group investigates feasibility of construction of a new powerful source of high-energy (102-103 keV) monochromatic electromagnetic radiation of a free-electron laser type formed by a bunch of ultra-relativistic particles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline-like structure.
- Nanoscale insights into ion beam cancer therapy. The group develops a novel, multiscale inclusive approach to the physics relevant to ion-beam cancer therapy, which is aimed at presenting a clear physical picture of the events starting from an ion entering tissue leading to DNA damage and then to the consequent apoptosis or death of the irradiated cancer cells.
