After a few years of research at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, I moved to the German Weather Service (DWD) to work within the EWeLiNE research project. Recently I took up permanent responsibilities as commissioner for civil protection at the DWD.

Computational biophysics

How does a multicellular tumour spheroid react to irradiation-treatment with heavy ions?
This question is part of the interdisciplinary CARADI research project which aims to model tumour dynamics under the action of irradiation and response of the immune system.

In order to simulate the reaction of complex biological entities such as a tumour to irradiation the relevant aspects of a cell have to be abstracted in a computational representation. Ascending from the level of a single cell to a fully grown tumour with millions of cells is a complex process which is described in the research section. At the end of the process we arrive at predictions of how the tumour will react to irradiation treatment as it is visualised in the picture below.
