I am interested in the organizing principles of the brain and other
complex biological systems. An important question is: how does the
global behavior of a complex system emerges from the local
interactions of its elements. I see these systems as self-organizing
dynamical systems, described by coupled nonlinear differential
equations.
The visual system is an excellent model system to study brain
dynamics. On the time scale of functional activity, I study
invariant object recognition (see the
Bernstein Focus Neurotechnology Frankfurt
and EU project
Daisy);
On the time scale of ontogenesis, we have cortical map formation
and self-construction of the visual cortex (see the EU project
SECO).
I am interested in general organizing rules of these systems
and have been developing methods to analyze their dynamics.
