The Helmholtz Research School supports the national and international scientific research in heavy-ion and hadron physics.
It is funded by the Initiative and Networking Fund of the Helmholtz Association and is a cooperation between the Gesellschaft
fuer Schwerionenforschung (GSI), Darmstadt, the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) and the physics department of
the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt.
TOPNEWS - Lecture Week Strasbourg
In perfect weather the 11th H-QM lecture week was organized on "Electromagnetic Probes"
in Strasbourg/France. Tetyana Galatyuk, Hendrik van Hees, Sascha Vogel and Klaus Reygers
discussed theoretical and experimental aspects of the topic.
The Spring 2012 lecture week for the H-QM4 group will be held at Kloster Marienburg
from May 7-11, 2012.

Power Week Data Analysis II
The third H-QM Power Week will focus on methods for jet measurements used in current data analysis
in heavy ion experiments.
It will be held in Chamonix/France November 9-13, 2011.
The aim is to broaden the hands on experience on such analysis techniques
not commonly used by the participants in their own thesis projects. The Power Week will be organized
together with the Hard-Photon Working Group of the ALICE experiment at CERN-LHC.
The traditional H-QM on Bike Summer activity will be held July 4, 2011. As every year participants
and organizers will improve their social competences while cycling, chatting and debating on the right
way.

Softskill Seminar - Buchenau
Another basic course in transferable skills will be held in Castle Buchenau in April 2011.
As usual it will be organized as a joint workshop with the other German Helmholtz Research Schools
and coaches from Imperial College, London.

Lecture Week Winter 2011
The third lecture week of the new H-QM group will be held at Manigod in the French Alps
from February 27 - March 6, 2011.
The second course in the series of H-QM softskill trainings will be held in Lohmar June 17.-21. 2010.
It will be organized as a joint workshop with the other German Helmholtz Research Schools
and coaches from Imperial College, London. Participants will work on their presentation and scientific writing
skills.
A basic course in transferable skills will be held in Castle Buchenau February 24.-27. 2010.
Again it will be organized as a joint workshop with the other German Helmholtz Research Schools
and coaches from Imperial College, London.
The first Lecture Week of the new H-QM group will be held at Haus Humboldtstein in Rolandseck at the Rhine River in March 2010.
Under the topic "Heavy Ion Collisions: The big picture" the lecture week will give a general overview about the field, the methods and concepts.
In December 2009 the first soft skill seminar of the new H-QM group will be held in Cologne as a joint workshop with the other
German Helmholtz Research Schools. The introductory seminar on transferable skills will be organized again together with coaches
from Imperial College, London.
A new group of H-QM participants starts their three year program with an introduction session at Frankfurt University.
In the following three years the participants will study together in a group and join lecture weeks, lectures and soft
skill seminars.

In November 2009 the last lecture week of the first H-QM group will be held in Kemer/Turkey.
In July 2009 participants and organizers of H-QM will continue with the tradition of 'H-QM on bike'.

Softskills 2009
The third softskill seminar of the Helmholtz Research School will be held in the Taunus in September 2009.
In cooperation with coaches from the Imperial College London it will focus on Career and Leadership -
Making Powerful Choices and a Positive Impact.
For the fifth H-QM lecture week in February 2009 participants and lecturers will travel to Manigod in the
French Alpes. Well suited for the start of the new LHC accelerator "Higgs, SUSY and Co." will be discussed.
In August 2008 participants and organizers of H-QM took a break from every day activities and enjoyed a sunny day with a
bike tour through the Wetterau.
The second softskill seminar of the Helmholtz Research School will be held in the Harz in July 2008.
In cooperation with coaches from the Imperial College London it will focus on presentation skills.
The forth lecture week of the Helmholtz Research School will be held at Brodten at the Baltic Sea in October 2008.
It will focus on non-heavy-ion LHC physics.
The Summer semester 2007 ended with the first Graduate Days of the Helmholtz Research School. Another highlight during
the semester was the first soft skill program organized together with the Imperial College, London.
A new journal club has been started. The club provides the opportunity to read papers together and to discuss them
with other participants of the school. The journal club is self organized by the participants.
The H-QM Lecture Bus provides transportation for participants and guests
to the H-QM basic lecture on Fridays at GSI. The bus stops at Campus Riedberg,
S-Bahn station Kaiserlei, and at GSI.
The first Helmholtz Softskill Program will be organized together with the
Imperial College London in June 2007. The venue will be Easthampsted Park,
a Victorian country mansion located within 60 acres of parkland, not far
from London, GB.
The first graduate days will be held at the new "Geo Center" at Campus Riedberg
on July 18 and 19, 2007. Details

The second lecture week will be held at Haus Bergkranz in the Kleinwalsertal/Austria
from 24-28.09.2007. The topic will be 'Chiral Symmetry'.

Lecture Week, 02-05.04.2007
A successful first Lecture Week was held at Haus Humboldtstein in Rolandseck at the Rhine River in April 2007.
At this lecture week particle production in heavy ion collisions and detector types used in heavy ion physics
were discussed by the two lecturers JProf Dr. Marcus Bleicher (Frankfurt) and Dr. Hans Rudolf Schmidt (GSI).
The lectures were supported by various talks of the participants.
The official opening of the new Helmholtz Research School was celebrated with an opening symposium
at GSI on October 9, 2006. Following greeting addresses by GSI, Frankfurt University and the
Helmholtz Association two main lectures were given: Prof. Berndt Mueller, Duke University, Durham, USA,
talked about "Some like it hot: the quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and LH(I)C.". Prof. Reinhard Stock
gave a lecture on "Hadron production in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions".

An information session on the program of the new Helmholtz Research School for participants of the school
was held at Frankfurt University October 16, 2006. The structure of the school, benefits and
program details were discussed. The session was followed by a social event to meet fellow participants
and members of the school.
